Overview

With the introduction of version 2.0 software or later software, University members can now access campus wireless access points and faculty and staff can synchronize their University email, calendar, and contacts over the air with Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

UITS supports connection of iPhone and iPod Touch devices to central campus email and wireless services only. To simplify configuration of these devices, UITS has created UConn-specific configuration profiles that allow iPhone/iPod users to authenticate and automatically configure their devices for University wireless and email services.

Questions about general media (photo, music, video) syncing or any/all other general support questions about iPod/iPhone support should be directed to one of the following Apple support/learning websites:

Note: As of March 2009, Apple iPhones cannot be purchased with official University funds, unless purchased by management-exempt members participating in the Wireless Stipend program (see the Wireless Stipend website for more info). University faculty and staff, please reference the University Telecom list PDA/Smart phone website for information of University-funded devices and cellular providers. Apple iPod Touch (wireless, non-cellular mobile devices) are treated as any other PDA device and are allowed for official University purchase.

  2. Navigate to http://iphone.uconn.edu on your iPhone
  3. Follow the instructions listed below

UConn Secure Wireless Configuration

  • Before connecting to secure wireless, you will need to change your NetID password from a desktop/laptop computer.
    • If you have changed your NetID later than 3/4/08 then you do not have to perform this step.
    • This will change your password for all applications that use NetID (ie: UConn email, HuskyCT, etc)

UConn Email Configuration
University faculty/staff only

  • Remove any existing faculty/staff University email account you may have configured (optional if previously setup to access the central email server). If you need to do this simply go into, Settings, select your UConn account, then press the Delete Account button

  • After connecting to the central Exchange server, all existing contact and calendar information on the iPhone/iPod is overwritten. Additionally, iTunes no longer syncs contacts and calendars with your desktop computer. All contacts, calendars that exist on your iPhone/iPod will be synced down from and backed up to the central Exchange server.

  • Be sure that you are using the uconn\NetID in the user name field that appears in the script below.

Troubleshooting
University faculty/staff only

Removing a UConn configuration profile:

  • Open Setting, select General, scroll to the bottom of the page to the Profiles section, click the profile you want to remove, and use the red Remove button to delete the configuration.
  • Open Settings, select Mail, Contacts, Calendars, select your UConn email account from the list, and use the Delete Account button to delete the account.

General Errors: "Cannot Get Mail" / "Unable to Move Message"

  • These messages are not unique to UConn's central email system, but often related to lags or interruptions in the data network that the iPhone is connected to. Most of these errors will resolve themselves automatically if you simply try to move messages at a later time or within a better network coverage area.
  • If you continue to see this issue across a longer period of time or after relocating to better coverage areas, you may need to reset the connection to the mail server. To reset your connection to the server, simply turn off your iPhone by pressing and holding power button on the top of the device for 3-5 seconds, then sliding across the screen to shut the device off. Wait 30 seconds, then turn back on and try again.
